We live in a culture obsessed with improvement. From school to work, the message is clear: find your weaknesses and fix them. Performance reviews highlight “development areas.” Self-help books shout at us to “close the gap.” Even our inner critic whispers daily reminders of what’s wrong with us.

But here’s the paradox: the more time you spend trying to fix what doesn’t work, the less energy you have for the things that actually make you come alive. Problems, when they become the center of attention, don’t just stay problems—they grow. They multiply. And they steal your focus from what could actually move you forward.

What if, instead of chasing flaws, you built on what’s already working?

Why Focusing on Problems Keeps You Stuck

Think about the last time you got lost in a problem. Maybe it was a project at work that wasn’t landing well, a skill you just couldn’t seem to master, or a personal habit you’ve been trying to “fix” for years. How did it feel?

Chances are, the more you stared at the issue, the bigger it seemed. The more energy you poured into solving it, the heavier it got.

That’s because problems act like quicksand. The harder you fight, the deeper you sink.

Attention magnifies. Where focus goes, energy flows. Staring at problems gives them life.
Negativity spreads. One unsolved issue can cloud everything else, making you blind to progress.
Progress slows down. Instead of building momentum, you burn out fixing things that may not even matter in the long run.

The Alternative: Double Down on What Works

When you shift focus from fixing to flourishing, everything changes.

Imagine two plants: one is struggling in the shade, wilting, and weak. The other is vibrant, thriving in the sunlight. You only have enough water for one. Which one do you nurture?

Most people pour water into the dying plant. But the truth is, if you water the one already growing, you’ll see far more life, growth, and joy.

Momentum builds naturally. Success in one area spills over into others.
Confidence expands. Celebrating wins strengthens your belief in what’s possible.
Joy becomes fuel. Doing what you enjoy gives you energy, not drains it.

Focusing on what works is not about ignoring problems—it’s about choosing where to place your precious energy.

Practical Ways to Focus on What Works

Here are some simple practices you can start today:

1. Do an Energy Audit

At the end of each day, write down:

What gave me energy today?
What drained my energy?

Patterns will emerge. Spend more time with what lights you up.

2. Start Meetings or Projects With Strengths

Instead of asking, “What’s wrong here?” ask, “What’s already working, and how can we do more of it?” This small shift changes the whole conversation.

3. Use the 80/20 Rule

Eighty percent of your results come from twenty percent of your efforts. Find that 20%—your strengths, your sweet spot—and amplify it.

4. Celebrate Wins, Big and Small

Recognition creates motivation. Don’t just move on to the next challenge; pause and acknowledge progress.

5. Reframe Problems Into Possibilities

If something isn’t working, don’t ask “How do I fix this?” Instead, ask: “What’s already good here, and how can I build on it?”

You Don’t Have to Fix Everything

Here’s a liberating truth: not every problem is yours to solve. Not every weakness needs fixing.

Some challenges are like background noise—annoying, but not worth the energy to eliminate. By ignoring them, you free yourself to focus on the music instead of the static.

Think of the best performers, athletes, or creators you admire. They didn’t become extraordinary by being “well-rounded.” They became extraordinary by going all-in on their strengths and passions.

Final Thought: Water the Right Plant

Life is short. You can spend it patching leaks, fixing flaws, and battling problems—or you can raise the sails, follow the wind, and let your strengths carry you.

Problems will always exist, but they don’t need your constant attention. Growth, joy, and momentum come from focusing on what already works.

Choose to water the thriving plant. That’s how you flourish.
