The Art of the Networking Coffee
How to turn small conversations into meaningful connections

There’s something powerful about a simple coffee.
It’s informal, short, and when done right can open unexpected doors.
Networking isn’t about collecting contacts, it’s about building relationships with intention, respect, and generosity. Here’s a practical guide to making those 20-minute conversations actually work for both people.
1. People want to help. Make it easy for them
Most professionals are happy to share time and advice. They’re simply busy. Be patient, be flexible, and follow up gently (two or three times is okay). A kind nudge often turns a missed email into a great conversation.
2. Keep it short and intentional
Ask for 20–30 minutes, not an hour. Offer to meet where it’s convenient for them and offer to pay. Respect for someone’s time sets the right tone from the start.
3. Prepare before you sit down
Do your homework. Learn about the person’s background and come with thoughtful, specific questions, questions that go beyond what a quick Google search would reveal. This shows respect and curiosity.
4. Be clear about what you want
When someone asks, “How can I help?” be ready with a crisp answer. Specific requests (advice on a role, feedback on a portfolio, or an intro to a team) make it easy for people to respond.
5. Give as well as receive
Networking is a two-way street. Look for small ways to contribute, share a helpful article, offer an intro, or follow up with useful context. Those small gestures make relationships stick.
6. Follow up and close the loop
Send a brief thank-you note that highlights one insight you found valuable. If someone introduced you to another contact, let the introducer know how it went. Closing the loop builds trust.
7. Stay connected without an agenda
Relationships grow slowly. Check in once in a while, share progress updates, or pass along something relevant. Doing so without asking for anything keeps the relationship genuine.
8. Be genuine
People sense when you’re transactional. Approach meetings with curiosity and humility. Show up to learn, not just to impress.
Final thought
Networking coffees aren’t about caffeine, they’re about connection. Treat each conversation as an opportunity to learn, contribute, and nurture a relationship that may pay off in unexpected ways down the line.
